“While the federal government abandons common-sense climate solutions that would help Marylanders soaring home energy bills, our Governor and state leaders are showing once again how Maryland can be an example of the strong connection between clean energy and affordability.”

The Trump administration changed guidance for two federal home energy rebate programs early this month, announcing it will no longer cover household switches from oil, propane or gas heating to electric heating.

The change will restrict how Maryland can use $136.6 million in federal dollars for household energy-saving upgrades, but the state is already well-positioned to fill in the gaps with its own funds.

This year, state legislators passed the Utility RELIEF Act – a massive energy policy overhaul that included $72.6 million specifically for heat pump upgrades.

Heat pumps are an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners, using electricity to transfer heat from cool spaces to warmer spaces.
