Maryland’s Environment Wins Big with the Election of Wes Moore

Baltimore, Maryland (November 8, 2022) – Although all the votes are not yet counted, it is looking like Maryland’s environment had a strong win on Election Day. In particular, Maryland LCV is excited that its endorsed candidates in the key statewide positions of Governor, Attorney General, and Comptroller are likely to win their races.

The Moore Administration has outlined a strong 100-day environmental plan for Maryland. We look forward to working with the new Administration and, in accordance with their 100-day climate plan, we call on the Moore Administration to fully commit to implementing Maryland’s landmark Climate Solutions Now Act, including reducing emissions from the transportation sector and facilitating building electrification.

The new administration must also implement concrete plans to move the state toward 100% clean energy by 2035, prioritizing wind, solar, and geothermal. We also are calling on the Moore administration to prioritize environmental justice throughout state agencies, policies  and in all funding decisions, and to ensure more robust community engagement and public participation in regulatory and permitting decisions.

Many of our candidates ran on pro-environment policies. Comptroller-elect Brooke Lierman, in particular, made the environment a staple of her campaign and the policies and strategies her office will implement moving forward. We also look forward to working with Attorney General-elect Anthony Brown to ensure that the Attorney General’s office continues to prioritize the environment. We will continue to be a resource for our newly elected officials as they are sworn into office, and we look forward to a cleaner, greener, and more equitable Maryland because of their leadership.

Maryland LCV supported the election of conservation champions this year through an in-depth endorsements process; extensive voter education efforts; financial support of key candidates; knocking on more than 3,000 doors in four dozen Maryland neighborhoods; calling hundreds of Marylanders, implementing a robust digital campaign, and volunteering at the polls. We are proud that Maryland LCV-endorsed candidates appear to have had a strong success rate this election season. We know we can count on them to fight to protect Maryland’s air and water, preserve our public lands, find solutions to the climate crisis, and create a brighter future for all of Maryland’s communities.
