Maryland League of Conservation Voters Endorses Brooke Lierman for Maryland Comptroller
Endorsement is group’s first for 2022 election cycle
January 10, 2022 (Annapolis, MD) – The Maryland League of Conservation Voters today endorsed Delegate Brooke Lierman (District 46) for Maryland Comptroller. Citing Del. Lierman’s legislative record, the group said it is excited to back a “proven environmental champion” as its first endorsement for the 2022 election cycle.
“Brooke Lierman has been a proven leader in the General Assembly for sound environmental policies, especially with regards to transportation, climate change and waste reduction.” said Maryland League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Kim Coble. “She has consistently demonstrated a commitment to transparency and accountability, and we believe Brooke will bring dedication and passion to stewarding Maryland’s finances in this key statewide office. And I am confident that the environment will remain front and center for Brooke in her role as Comptroller.”
The organization was especially impressed by Del. Lierman’s plan to hire a Climate Resilience Officer within the Comptroller’s office to coordinate efforts relating to the effect of climate change throughout the state, especially in disproportionately impacted communities.
“Brooke understands that the effects of climate change are greater in some communities than others, and has a people-centered approach to making the Comptroller’s office responsive and accessible to all Marylanders,” Coble added. “She is a creative thinker and we are excited to work with her to put those ideas into action across the state.”
“The Comptroller plays a crucial role in ensuring Maryland effectively supports workers, families, and businesses, and creates thriving communities,” said Lynn Heller, Chair of the Maryland League of Conservation Voters. “Brooke’s impeccable track record as a visionary conservation partner convinces me that Marylanders will be able to depend on her to hear their concerns and craft workable solutions to the economic challenges our state faces.”
“Her policy positions are consistently thoughtful, and she has articulated both visionary thinking and concrete plans for how the Comptroller can support Maryland’s environmental goals, including a specific emphasis on climate and justice,” added Heller. “Brooke has an acute awareness that climate change will increasingly shape Maryland’s economic future. She is dedicated to using the considerable power of the Comptroller’s office to serve communities that have suffered neglect, disinvestment, and the negative effects of pollution that climate change exacerbates.”
Lierman was first elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2015. After spending five years as a Member of the Appropriations Committee in the General Assembly, she assumed a leadership role on the Environment and Transportation Committee in 2019. She also founded and co-chairs the Maryland Transit Caucus. She won Maryland LCV’s Legislator of the Year award for her work on the statewide polystyrene foam ban and has a lifetime score of above 95% on Maryland LCV’s Environmental Scorecard, which scores legislators on their environmental votes.
Upon receiving the endorsement, Brooke Lierman said, “Maryland LCV is a key political voice of the environment in Maryland, and I am humbled to receive their endorsement. As Comptroller, I look forward to continuing to partner with Maryland LCV to create equitable climate solutions and thriving communities across our state.”
Maryland LCV’s endorsement process is based on proven leadership on the environment for incumbents and a thorough evaluation of each new candidate’s background and commitment to the environment. Before each state election, the Maryland League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Board of Directors and staff evaluate questionnaires and conduct interviews with dozens of candidates for state-wide office, including Comptroller, Attorney General, and Governor, as well as candidates for the Maryland House of Delegates and Senate.
“Electing a pro-conservation General Assembly and statewide leadership are critical to protecting Maryland’s environment,” said Maryland LCV’s Kim Coble. “Maryland LCV’s endorsements, our investments, and the engagement of our supporters will play a key role in winning these races. In 2018, over 85% of candidates endorsed by Maryland LCV won their general election races.”
In the 2022 elections, Maryland LCV will once again campaign to elect pro-conservation candidates. The organization will release additional endorsements in the coming weeks.
