Maryland League of Conservation Voters Commends Governor Moore for Prioritizing Climate and Environment in Budget
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 21, 2025) — The Maryland League of Conservation Voters (Maryland LCV) appreciates Governor Wes Moore’s efforts to prioritize funding to protect Maryland’s environment and fight climate change in his FY2027 budget, which he released today. A budget is a statement of values, and the Governor’s budget shows that even in a tough budget year, he recognizes that clean air and water are essential for Marylanders’ health and quality of life alike.
The budget includes investments in EV charging, solar development on state properties, and advancing processes to modernize existing and co-locate transmission lines along existing state and interstate highways. These investments will improve the effectiveness and resilience of the energy grid. Renewable energy sources are the least expensive and most easily deployable option, and therefore the best way to help ratepayers already burdened with soaring utility costs. Furthermore, the funding for agency budgets improves their ability to protect critical environmental assets and enforce existing laws.
“Governor Moore’s budget confirms that prioritizing the environment will help assure a better Maryland,” said Kim Coble, Executive Director of Maryland LCV. “These investments are especially critical, as they come at a time when the federal government has stepped back from its commitments to the climate and environment.”
Maryland LCV will be working with the General Assembly to ensure investments of the Strategic Energy Investment Fund (SEIF) are at least level funding of $365 million for climate and energy programs. Ensuring at least level funding of SEIF is critical to ensure Maryland meets our climate goals. Maryland LCV also stands with our partners, urging level funding of other environmental programs, including the Bay Restoration Fund, the 2010 Fund, and Program Open Space.
Maryland LCV will host a discussion on this year’s budget in its first Friday Digest of 2026, this Friday, January 23, at noon. Register to attend at THIS LINK.
