Maryland League of Conservation Voters Announces 2025 Legislative Priorities as General Assembly Session Opens

As the Maryland General Assembly begins its 2025 legislative session today, the Maryland League of Conservation Voters (Maryland LCV) highlights the growing importance of state leadership in environmental protection and climate action. Following significant achievements in 2024, including the passage of the Whole Watershed Act and securing $90 million in climate funding, Maryland LCV outlines its priorities for continued progress in 2025.

The organization’s legislative agenda focuses on four key priorities: the Abundant, Affordable Clean Energy (AACE) Act, which ensures reliable and affordable clean energy while protecting ratepayers; the Nearshore Farm Finance Act, creating financial incentives for conservation practices near tidal waters; the CHERISH Our Communities Act, reforming environmental permitting to protect overburdened communities; and the Coal Clean Up and Asthma Mitigation Fund, creating revenue for climate programs and addressing the health impacts of coal transport.

“Maryland has consistently demonstrated that state-level action drives meaningful environmental progress,” said Kim Coble, Executive Director of Maryland LCV. “Our 2025 agenda builds on this momentum, focusing on solutions that support both our environment and our communities while ensuring Maryland remains at the forefront of climate action.”

Kristen Harbeson, Political Director of Maryland LCV, emphasized the organization’s advocacy strategy: “The strength of our advocacy comes from merging policy expertise with community power. Last session, we helped secure major wins including the Brighter Tomorrow Act because Marylanders demanded action. In 2025, we’re amplifying these voices to achieve ambitious climate and environmental justice goals.”

“When families open their energy bills each month, they shouldn’t have to choose between affordability and clean power,” said Rebecca Rehr, Climate Policy & Justice Director. “The AACE Act changes that equation by making clean energy more affordable and reliable, while ensuring the benefits flow back to Maryland residents through innovative profit-sharing.”
