Maryland LCV Celebrates National Climate Commitment, Highlights State Progress

The Maryland League of Conservation Voters (Maryland LCV) applauds today’s announcement from President Biden reaffirming the United States’ commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and celebrates Maryland’s continued leadership in advancing climate solutions.

This ambitious new national target of reducing emissions 61-66 percent by 2035 from 2005 levels, supported by governors across the country through the U.S. Climate Alliance, demonstrates the critical role that states play in achieving our nation’s climate goals. As we face growing environmental challenges, state leadership and action are more important than ever to create meaningful change and ensure accountability for climate commitments.

“Maryland continues to demonstrate that states can lead the way in tackling the climate crisis while creating economic opportunities and protecting public health for all,” said Kim Coble, Executive Director of Maryland LCV. “This past year alone, we secured $90 million for climate programs, expanded solar access, and strengthened energy efficiency standards. Looking ahead to 2025, we’re ready to build on this momentum and work with our state leaders to advance bold climate action that creates jobs, improves public health, and ensures clean air and water for every Marylander.”

The economic benefits of climate action in Maryland are already clear. The state has added over 160,000 new jobs and attracted more than $2.7 billion in private sector investment, including a $350 million investment from Constellation Energy to increase the output and lifespan of its renewable energy portfolio. These investments demonstrate that addressing climate change creates significant economic opportunities for Marylanders.
