Changemakers 2023: Event Highlights of Our Progress and Partnerships

Recently the Maryland League of Conservation Voters (Maryland LCV) hosted its most successful Changemakers: Celebrating Environmental Leaders event to date, setting new fundraising and attendance records. As we take a moment to reflect on the event’s highlights, we’re filled with gratitude for our community of partners and our collective work to make Maryland a national leader in addressing climate change.

First and foremost, we extend our deepest appreciation to everyone who attended the event. Your presence, enthusiasm, and unwavering support were the cornerstone of the event’s success.

“Being a changemaker is hard and it takes partnership. We praise these changemakers not only for their individual accomplishments, but also for how their collective accomplishments moved us forward,” said Gov. Moore. “If we follow the example of these changemakers, I know we will meet this moment united and build a better, more sustainable, more resilient, and more equitable future.”

By the Numbers

Our 2023 Changemakers drew historic participation, with a sold out crowd of nearly 450 individuals. We were thrilled to welcome many distinguished guests, including Governor Wes Moore who delivered our keynote address. Elected officials from all corners of the state joined in the celebration, affirming their commitment to a more sustainable Maryland.

As one of our biggest fundraising opportunities, Changemakers 2023 reached new heights, generating over $370,000, which will support our efforts toward a healthy environment for all Marylanders. This fundraising success is a community effort, reflected in the support from our 95 business, organization, and individual sponsors – including returning Changemakers title sponsor Ørsted and 25 new sponsors.

Honoring Maryland’s Changemakers

One of the event’s signature moments was recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of our five awardees:

  • Liz Burdock, President & CEO, Business Network for Offshore Wind
  • Senator Benjamin T. Brooks, Sr. (District 10, Baltimore County)
  • Chair Luke H. Clippinger, Esq. (District 46, Baltimore City)
  • Delegate Lorig Charkoudian, PhD. (District 20, Montgomery County)
  • Delegate Dana Stein (District 11B, Baltimore County)

Their achievements have played a pivotal role in protecting Maryland’s clean water, healthy air, and resilient communities, particularly in relation to the goals set forth by the Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022.

This year’s celebration story revolved around key achievements, such as the permanency of the Community Solar program, expansion of offshore wind energy goals, and the broader implications of the Climate Solutions Now Act. Each of these milestones set the backdrop for our awardees’ recognitions and Governor Moore’s inspiring remarks. We were especially honored that the Governor engaged with our awardees and guests, underscoring his commitment to our cause.

Our five awardees joined a panel discussion, “Addressing Climate Change: Maryland’s Ambitious Goals & Critical Actions,” adding depth and perspective to the evening. The discussion highlighted the challenges – and successes – of offshore wind energy, the importance of community-based renewable energy programs like Community Solar, strengthening Maryland’s legal environmental framework, and the balance between progressive climate policy and economic disparities.

Looking Ahead

As we continue building on the momentum from Changemakers, we’re reminded of the power of our community and the goals we share. Maryland LCV remains committed to the implementation of strong, comprehensive climate policies on our path to 100% Clean Energy by 2035.

To all of our attendees, partners, and sponsors: Thank you for making Changemakers 2023 a resounding success. Let’s continue to work together for clean water, healthy air, and a resilient climate for everyone in Maryland.
