The state of Maryland is signing agreements to buy electricity generated by four wind and solar projects in the region.

Energy Administration Director Malcolm Woolf says the 20-year contracts will cover 23 percent of the electricity used each year by state agencies and institutions. The state will buy all of the electricity generated by a wind farm near Keyser, West Virginia, by a planned wind farm by U.S. Wind Power of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and a solar project called Constellation Energy is building in Frederick County, Maryland.

The state will also buy some of the power produced by a wind farm being planned for Garrett County, Maryland by Annapolis-based Synergics, Inc. An offshore wind farm that Bluewter Wind of Hoboken, New Jersey is also in the planning stages to be built off the coast of Delaware, and Maryland will purchase power from that wind farm as well.
