In Their Words …
“Keeper of political scorecards on environmental votes, this small but feisty group actually endorses candidates who might be good for green causes. Its small staff proves that you don't need a huge budget to make a difference. Still, more money couldn't hurt”

Protect Maryland Lands

Vote for Question 1 - Open Space! You can help protect Maryland's parks, farms, and open spaces!

Help us pass Question #1 on the November 7th ballot. Question #1 would approve a constitutional amendment to prevent the state from selling public lands purchased for conservation -- such as state and city parks, conservation farmlands and open spaces -- without proper oversight by Maryland’s General Assembly.

Please tell all the Maryland voters you know to vote yes for Question #1 on November 7th!

Why Protecting Conservation Lands Is Important

Once a national leader on smart growth and land conservation, Maryland has been slipping in the opposite direction. Dedicated funding for land conservation programs has been repeatedly diverted to unrelated purposes. In recent years, raids of over $480 million of land conservation funding brought land preservation almost to a halt.

In 2004, Governor Ehrlich attempted to sell off open space land to a private developer. This prompted outcry from Marylanders and state legislators, who passed a bill putting a constitutional amendment on the ballot this fall.

Question #1 would create a constitutional amendment to prevent the State from selling off any state park, conservation or recreational land without approval from the General Assembly.

On November 7th, voters have a chance to send a clear message to our elected officials that Marylanders care about land conservation. The Maryland League of Conservation Voters Education Fund is working to educate voters and gain support for Question # 1 on the November ballot -- please help us!
